Sorbitol or glucitol is a natural polyol with a sweetening power that is twice as low as sucrose. Unlike oses (is the monomer of carbohydrates), its structure contains no ketone or aldehyde function.
It is mainly used as a mass sweetener to replace sucrose. It is also used as a sequestering agent, excipient, humectant or stabilizer in medicines, cosmetics and food. It is metabolized slowly by the body and brings few calories. It is also a laxative when consumed in high doses.
